Building a new home is a major decision, but little decisions and details in how the house is constructed and what products are used can make a world of difference in the performance of your new home. The Louisiana Department of Natural Resources (DNR) has defined a high performance home as:
- Energy Efficient (less expensive to own and operate)
- Comfortable (no drafts or hot and cold spots)
- Good Indoor Air Quality (less dust, mold, etc.)
- Quiet (less outdoor noise)
- Long lasting (durable) (less moisture-induced rot)
- Better for the Environment (causes less air and water pollution)
The materials and systems that have the most effect on performance (i.e. heating and air conditioning systems, insulation, etc.) are usually not the primary concern to new home owners. Although these items play a major role in the lifetime cost of ownership, new home owners are usually focused only on the initial cost of a home.
